The England boss Gareth Southgate Defended Harry Maguire
Gareth Southgate passionately defended Harry Maguire after Scotland fans jeered him during England's 3-1 win at Hampden Park on Tuesday; The Man Utd defender scored an own goal after coming on as a half-time substitute; “It's a joke, an absolute joke. “This excites me,” Southgate said.
The situation was similar to Manchester United's match against Arsenal, where his arrival on the pitch was greeted with much applause from the Gunners fans.
But while Southgate praised the support Maguire has received from England fans at Hampden Park, he described himself as "in tears" at the constant criticism the defender has received at home.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, the England manager said: "He's just come out and spoken to the media, which I think shows his resilience and his character."
“Now we are in a situation where the opposition believes they can support him because of the people of our country. What is this about?"
